DENTAL IMPLANTS

A dental implant (also known as an endosseous implant or fixture) is a surgical component that interfaces with the bone of the jaw or skull to support a dental prosthesis such as a crown, bridge, denture, facial prosthesis or to act as an orthodontic anchor. The basis for modern dental implants is a biologic process called osseointegration where materials, such as titanium, form an intimate bond to bone. The implant fixture is first placed, so that it is likely to osseointegrate, then a dental prosthetic is added. A variable amount of healing time is required for osseointegration before either the dental prosthetic (a tooth, bridge or denture) is attached to the implant or an abutment is placed which will hold a dental prosthetic.

Dental implants are designed of synthetic materials, and act as a replacement for the root of your missing tooth. They can be used to replace one or many missing teeth, or as an anchor for dentures. Dental implants are a permanent solution to replace missing teeth, designed to provide a foundation for new teeth that act, feel, and look as natural as the teeth you were born with.

Dental implants have become the preferred method for tooth replacement because of their abilities to perfectly mimic the natural tooth in function and aesthetics. In fact, dental implants are the only tooth replacement solution that protects the health of the jawbone, halting any bone loss that may occur when a tooth is missing. With good oral hygiene at home and skilled placement by our talented dentist, Dr. Leizgold of Polo Dental Naples, dental implants are meant to provide a lifetime of sound, beautiful smiling.

The placement of dental implants involves a procedure where the implant is inserted directly into the jawbone. Once the implants are placed, Dr. Leizgold will close the tissue over the dental implants, and they will be left to heal for about 3-6 months. During that time, the dental implant and surrounding bone tissue go through a process known as osseointegration, where the bone and implant fuse together and become a sturdy foundation for new tooth.

Once the dental implant heals, a post known as an abutment will be attached. Your new crown, bridge or denture replacement will then be attached to the abutment. Dental implants can also be used to anchor dental bridges and dentures, if multiple teeth are missing.

Don’t live the rest of your life in embarrassment and malfunction due to missing teeth. If you are suffering from the effects of a missing tooth or teeth, and would like to correct your smile, dental implants may be the solution you.
